Our Treatment Philosophy

Stroke ranks among the deadliest and most complicated of healthcare problems. Until recently, physicians could treat only the devastating aftermath of stroke.  Advances in medical technology have made it possible to limit, and in some cases even prevent, the consequences of stroke if proper treatment is received quickly.

A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is blocked, depriving it of oxygen. Deprivation lasting more than a few moments can cause brain damage and result in permanent disability or death.

In the event of a stroke, time saved is brain saved. That’s why at the St John Stroke Center we have established a pathway to:
  • Reduce time delays for medical care in the Emergency Department by treating potential stroke patients as critical. That means no sitting in the waiting room while precious seconds tick by and permanent, long-term damage occurs.
  • Reduce medical complications
  • Reduce time in the hospital

Stroke Therapies

Stroke therapies include medical treatments, advanced endovascular and neurosurgical techniques, as well as interventional neuroradiology procedures.

Some of the highlights of our Center’s comprehensive treatment regiment include:
  • The latest imaging technologies, as well as medical, endovascular and neurosurgical expertise.
  • A multidisciplinary team incorporating neurological, medical, emergency, surgical, radiologic, and rehabilitation services.
  • Education and outreach to surrounding hospitals, because every minute counts to save the injured brain.

A Team Approach

Working together, we create the best care possible. Our multidisciplinary team includes neurologists, radiologists, primary care and internal medicine physicians, stroke nurses, EMSA responders, cardiologists, neurosurgeons, nutritionists, emergency department physicians and nurses, social services, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists.

Technology

Once at the St. John Stroke Center, patients can expect our staff to work quickly and efficiently to find the best treatment for their individual case. Our Center is home to state-of-the-art technology, including CT and MRI scans to evaluate brain tissue and blood vessels, fast acting medication to break up clots and endovascular procedures to remove clots.

Our staff stands ready to provide care that was not technologically possible just a few years ago.

Using strict treatment guidelines, St. John Stroke Center ensures that each aspect of treatment is delivered at the appropriate time and with utmost attention to detail.
